Nampa Overview
Automated Trash and Recycling Considered
City of Nampa is considering a "Pay As You Throw" method of trash collection that would require wheeled carts for all residents. Records show that 60% of Nampa residents are already choosing to use the wheeled carts, which can be lifted by the truck rather than by drivers or other employees.
Several changes will take place if the cart system is approved by City Council:
- 1. Residents will choose between a 48 gallon, a 65 gallon or a 95 gallon wheeled cart for trash, which may be either purchased or leased from Allied Waste.
- 2. All items, including yard clippings, must fit inside the cart.
There are ways residents can significantly cut down on the amount of trash, allowing them to use a smaller sized trash cart:
- 1. Residents will choose between a 48 gallon, a 65 gallon or a 95 gallon wheeled cart for recycling, which may be either purchased or leased from by Allied Waste (this can be larger than the size chosen for trash.)
- 2. Residents will no longer have to sort items for recycling.
- 3. The city now offers a composting opportunity by accepting lawn clippings in the spring and summer and leaves in the fall at a fenced area at the Kohlerlawn Cemetery (items must be trash free and cannot be in plastic bags) Christmas trees are also accepted in the winter.
- 4. Mulching while mowing the lawn eliminates the need to throw away lawn clippings.
Twice a year there will be an opportunity to put an unlimited amount of trash and larger items to the curb, and residents will receive tokens that will allow them to put out an extra garbage can five times during the year. More tokens may also be purchased. There will also be the option of purchasing a trash cart and a recycling cart from Allied Waste for $90 each.
The monthly charges are based on the size of cart chosen for trash: Container Size w/ leased own one trash cart own trash & recycling cart
48 gallon $12.13 $10.63 $9.13
65 gallon $15.00 $13.50 $12.00
95 gallon $17.88 $16.38 $14.88
The bill for residents currently not using carts is about $12.25 per month. Those currently using carts of any size are billed $15.98 per month, so those using the small or medium sized carts will actually see a decrease in their trash bill.
A presentation on the proposed automated trash and recycling program will be given to the Nampa City Council at a special workshop July 19, 2010 at 3:30PM in Nampa City Hall, City Council Chambers. There will be a public hearing on August 2, 2010, 7:30PM during the Nampa City Council meeting.
